WE RISE: Body Love with Carly from People's Yoga

Join us for a yoga class with Carly from People's Yoga in conjunction with our WE RISE events centered on holistic wellness.

This session will tend to your beautiful and whole body. The session will begin with a warm-up, then flow into fun and invigorating poses with smooth transitions that link your movement with your breath. Gentle reminders to love your body will be sprinkled all over you!

Instructor Bio: Born and raised in South San Gabriel, Carly discovered yoga at 20 when she moved to the Bay Area to attend San Francisco State University. She felt like an outsider in traditional yoga studios that are often pretentious and unaffordable. She was thrilled to finally find People’s Yoga which offered affordable and accessible yoga with teachers and practitioners that actually looked like her! The community aspect inspired her to complete People’s Yoga’s first-ever 200-hour teacher training and inspired her to create Full Moon Yoga - a mobile, donation-based outdoor yoga experience that takes place every full moon. Bringing the practice outdoors and in people’s yards makes the experience more comfortable and non-intimidating, especially for folks who have never tried yoga before. Carly keeps it light-hearted and real with bomb playlists, full moon horoscopes, and always ending with a group howl at the moon!

Free to attend, registration required.

Artist Talk: Un Cuarto Para Cada Corazón

Thu, August 3, 2017

7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Self Help Graphics and Art is currently working with Dalila Paola Mendez and a cohort of queer women of color on Queerida, a printmaking atelier. Earlier this year, Gabriel Garcia Roman created a work in our print studio as part of his Queer Icon series and both projects have brought up an opportunity to dialogue on the way places like Self Help Graphics have played a role in supporting and honoring LGBTQ voices.

Moderated by the artist behind Veteranas and Rucas, this gathering of voices across generations will discuss the importance of the arts in building community and safe creative spaces for LGBTQ Chicanxs and Latinxs, how this has evolved on the Eastside, and what can be done to bridge generations today and continue to fill gaps for our LGBTQ family.

Panelists include:

+ Guadalupe Rosales (Veteranas and Rucas, former Self Help Graphics Artist in Residence)
+ Dalila Paola Mendez (Curator of Queerida Printmaking Atelier at SHG, 2017)
Latino Equality Alliance & Mi Centro youth participant Charlie Ruiz Vazquez
+ Miguel Angel Reyes Illustrator 2 (Curator of Homohombre Atelier at SHG, 2008, and Drawing Instructor at Otis College)

Tickets are FREE, but RSVP is kindly requested via Eventbrite link.

Artist Dialogue about Arts & Gentrification

Self Help Graphics & Art would like to invite the longstanding Eastside community of artists, artisans (food, apparel, accessories, etc.), cultural workers, curators, musicians, film makers, and all other creative individuals to come together and create a collective understanding and response to the influx of outside artists, galleries and art spaces.

The goal of this gathering is to put together a set of guidelines and agreements to mitigate any and all potential threats of displacement of not only physical space but also the siphoning of resources and access.

This gathering will be followed up by an additional meeting, requesting the attendance of these new galleries and art spaces to hear directly from this community of artists about the collective set of guidelines & agreements as well as concerns surrounding their presence.
