ABOUT SHG YOUTH ARTIVISM internship
The Youth Artivism Internship is a program aimed at integrating more art and youth voices into our housing justice advocacy with Eastside LEADS. It is open to youth ages 18-24 living in Los Angeles who have an interest in advocacy, activism, and the arts, as well as strong ties to the community.
It provides participants with the experience of using art as a tool for social action and addresses issues set by Eastside LEADS. The interns work closely with SHG and the Eastside LEADS staff to inform and help develop art projects, activations, and/or exhibitions responding to the issues of displacement and gentrification.
Participants receive training and guidance on civic engagement, how to lead programming, artivism, and issues of interest to their communities. The interns have a commitment of 20 hours per month for a 9-month term. The internship includes a stipend for participation.

Summer of youth: EMPOWERMENT THROUGH ART
S.O.Y. Artista is a free five-week summer art program for youth, 11-24 years old, from the communities of East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, and the greater Los Angeles area. The program provides youth with access to the arts, one-on-one instruction, and an in-depth art experience that culturally connects them to their community, establishing translatable skills for their participation in higher education and the workforce. No prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to students.
We serve youth with this critical programming while providing positive and alternative models for creativity in a nurturing environment.

Creative Labs
Creative Labs is a partnership between SHG and Mendez High School that enhances student engagement by integrating art in the classroom setting. SHG Teaching artists use SHG’s wealth of serigraphs in its archive among many other artistic examples for visual and historical reference that complements and enhances English and American History curriculum resulting in film-making, stop motion animation, collage, zine-making, and more.
Students in Ms Gallego’s Government and Comparative Government classes collaborated with Self-Help Graphics on an art project titled "Reclaiming Peace and Indigenous Values Through Art Education." Their artwork was showcased at the International Peace Research Association Conference. Students created this video to showcase at the conference.
