Día de los Muertos Workshops (Week 4)

Join us for our Dia de los Muertos season art workshops, where you can create beautiful crafts to honor your ancestors! Workshops will be held on Saturdays in October 2024, specifically on October 5, 12, & 26, from 12:00 PM.-3:00 PM and October 19, from 3:00 PM-5:00 PM at the East Los Angeles County Library.

Our free seasonal workshops feature exciting activities such as Papel Picado, crafting Paper Marigolds, Painting with Natural Dyes and decorating a Pre-made Calaca Magnet that participants can take home. Please note that the Painting with Natural Dyes workshops are only available on the 5th and 12th of October and the Pre-made Calaca Magnet workshops are only available on the 19th and the 26th of October.

Space is limited, registration is highly encouraged. This workshop is open to all ages, and no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to participants. Masks are optional.

DIY Screen Printing Screen Filler & Drawing Fluid Workshop

Our D.I.Y. Silkscreen workshop is back Saturday, June 22nd, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Cultivarte Studios, located at 4346 Gage Ave, Bell, CA 90201. Our one-day DIY screen printing with screen filler and drawing fluid workshop, teaches participants how to use Speedball's drawing fluid and screen filler which is an easy way to start creating screen-printed art at home. With brushes and other drawing tools, you can draw your design directly onto a screen. Prepared screens can be used to print on a variety of surfaces including paper, textiles, and clothing. With this class, you can make posters or print your design on a tote bag. Space is limited. Registration is required for this workshop. Register here.

Did you register? Know before you go:

  • Bring two copies of either a photo or design, printed on transparency sheets in black and white, to this workshop (acetate/transparency film for inkjet printers). *Transparency sheets can be purchased at your local office supply store or on site during the workshop and you can draw your design.

  • The printouts should measure no larger than 8-1/2 x 11 inches. *Images can be printed at a print and copy center such as Staples and FedEx Office Print & Ship Center.

  • A limited number of tote bags are available for purchase. If you wish to purchase on site, let your teaching artist know.

  • All other materials will be provided. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own paper, or tote bags on which they wish to print their designs.

  • This workshop is recommended for ages 12 years and older. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

  • No-show registered participants will not be issued refunds.

Self Help Graphics & Art is thrilled to welcome you to an Open Studio experience with our Beyond the Press artist in residence, Zoe Blaq, at our remote office located at 2440 Daly St. LA, CA. 90032 in Lincoln Heights on Saturday, June 29 between 12PM-3PM. Participate in a worm farm workshop with the artist and sign up to serenade the crowd with BiciCrófono L.Á., the mobile karaoke platform! ! About Beyond the Press

SHG's Beyond The Press residency invites one interdisciplinary artist to create a new body of work over the course of a year. Artists are selected through a nomination process and by invitation only.

About Zoe Blaq

Zoe is an interdisciplinary artist, mental health advocate, published poet, and urban gardener from Los Angeles. She uses mixed media, installations, eco-art, storytelling, performance, video, photography, and zines for art activism and to empower marginalized communities. As the founder of Urban Soul Farmer, she engages and educates the broader community on topics of food justice, indigenous agriculture, and healing arts. She develops urban garden and art programs for ex-offenders, disabled adults, and LA county schools.

Family Workshop at Eas LA Library - June 2024

Urban Garden Earth Day Celebration and Art Workshop

Join us for an Earth Day Celebration and the launch of our 2024 Nature, Art and Healing Workshop series in collaboration with the beautiful Willowbrook Community Garden. Roneika Pinkney, garden leader and master gardener will guide us in a nature related art activity. The workshop is free and open to all ages, all materials will be provided to participants. Family Workshop: Soil Time!

Join us for our free Family Workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library on Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 p.m. with Teaching Artist Jess Gudiel and delve into the world of soil! We'll use clay to create pendants, then carve into them different tiny creatures living in healthy soil, like worms, bacteria, and more! This workshop celebrates life within the soil, focusing on the beneficial organisms that thrive there. Participants will receive clay, a skewer, and twine to create their soil-inspired pendant. We'll guide you through rolling the clay and carving your chosen soil creature into it. Once your pendant is dry, you can wear it proudly or display it as a decoration. 

This workshop is part of Prospering backyards series of workshops in partnership with Self Help Graphics and the Natural History Museum. Walk-ins are welcome.

Family Workshop: Painting with Natural Dyes

Join us for our free Family Workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library on Saturday, March 30, at 1:00 p.m. with Teaching Artist, Cayetano Talavera who will lead a Nature's Palette: Painting with Natural Dyes workshop! Participants will delve into the art of creating surface design with paints derived from roots, flowers, and tree bark. You will be guided through the process of natural dyes, and you'll have the opportunity to express your creativity on a cotton bandana.

In this hands-on session, participants will be introduced to the magic of natural dyes, gaining insights into the methods and techniques that transform botanicals into beautiful hues. Each attendee will receive a cotton bandana, ready to be adorned with their unique artistic expression. The surface designs you paint will come to life with the rich colors from nature. This workshop invites you to connect closer to nature through the exploration of sustainable and eco-friendly art practices. The instructions will be available in both English and Spanish. Come join the fun! 

This workshop is open to all ages, and no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to participants.

Our D.I.Y. Silkscreen workshop with Ernesto Vazquez is back Saturday, March 23, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Art Share L.A.! Our one-day do-it-yourself workshop teaches participants to transfer their designs or photos onto a screen. Prepared screens can be used to print on a variety of surfaces including paper, textiles, and clothing. With this class, you can make posters or print your design on a tote bag. Space is limited.

Did you register? Know before you go:

  • Bring two copies of either a photo or design, printed on transparency sheets in black and white, to this workshop (acetate/transparency film for inkjet printers). *Transparency sheets can be purchased at your local office supply store or on site during the workshop and you can draw your design.

  • The printouts should measure no larger than 8-1/2 x 11 inches. *Images can be printed at a print and copy center such as Staples and FedEx Office Print & Ship Center.

  • A limited number of tote bags are available for purchase. If you wish to purchase on site, let your teaching artist know.

  • All other materials will be provided. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own paper, or tote bags on which they wish to print their designs.

Join Self Help Graphics for our monthly Wellness Wednesday workshop at Latinx with Plants on February 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. During these times of collective consciousness of the struggles facing many communities, we bear witness and hold space for suffering worldwide, raising a need for places to gather in community. Facilitator Xochitl Palmera will guide you to gather and ground and have an opportunity to share palabra, cantos, and the heart-healing medicine of Xocolatl. In Lak'ech: Collective Care for Collective Grieving will be a space for community members to hold each other and make space for us by us.

Wellness Wednesday Embodied Watercolors: Using Art as a Path to Mindfulness

Join us on Wednesday, January 17 to learn how to use art as a mindfulness practice. The session, led by licensed therapist Nadia Paredes, will begin with a body scan meditation to connect attendees with their inner creative and find artistic inspiration. Afterwards, through a process based watercolor exercise, the group will capture the imagery that emerged from the meditation and continue deepening their mindfulness practice as they create art intuitively. Wellness Wednesday: Ancestor Portraits with Dalila Paola Mendez

***Wellness Wednesday evenings of mindfulness and self-care take place on third Wednesdays of the month at Latinx with Plants in Boyle Heights.***

To celebrate this season of reflection, gratitude and remembrance, we invite you to create a portrait of an ancestor during our Wellness Wednesday workshop on November 15, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m at Latinx with Plants. Led by artist Dalila Paola Méndez, the workshop will begin with a guided meditation and sharing circle to create a safe space. Participants will bring a photo of their loved ones and embellish a frame using collage and mixed media. We invite you to take home your portrait to display in a personal altar. No previous experience is necessary. This workshop is free and recommended for ages 15+. Space is limited, register here to attend.

Join us on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 for our monthly Wellness Wednesday Workshop at Latinx with Plants inspired by our Día de los Muertos season. Led by Cayetano Talavera, this workshop aims to introduce participants to the natural dyeing process, utilizing marigold flowers, commonly associated with the celebration of the Día de Los Muertos. Exploring the art of natural dyeing not only fosters creativity but also promotes a sense of wellness by reconnecting with nature. The therapeutic process of tying, dipping, and dyeing with cempasúchil (marigold) flowers will offer a relaxing and meditative experience, promoting a sense of well-being and tranquility. No experience required. Recommended for Ages 15+.
