Soil Time!: Holiday Family Workshop

Self Help Graphics and Prospering Backyards present a Soil Time! Family Holiday Workshop on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in honor of World Soil Day, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., at the East Los Angeles County Library. Teaching Artist Dalila Paola Mendez will lead a holiday seasonal art making workshop using paper and watercolor. 

Our monthly free Family Workshop is held at the East Los Angeles Library every second Saturday of the month in the Community Room. Limited public parking is available. The East Los Angeles County Library is located at 4837 E 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90022, directly across from the Metro L Line East LA Civic Center Station, at 3rd Street and Mednik Avenue.

How can soil survive pollution, nutrient depletion, and urban sprawl? Get up close with native plants healing the soil underground, learn how communities fight urban sprawl that destroy neighborhoods and the soil they rely on, and discover new ways of landscaping that nurture the soil and the life it grows.

This series continues with Rooted: Our Cultural Connection to Soil on July 2.

Guided Tour: PST Exhibition Walk-Through of Día de los Muertos - Past, Present, Future with Consuelo Flores

Come join us for a guided tour of Self Help Graphics' Getty Pacific Standard Time LA/LA exhibition, Día de los Muertos: A Cultural Legacy, Past, Present, and Future. Each tour will be led by a guest artist and accompanied by our team of Youth Ambassadors.

The exhibition is part of Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative and features three Día de los Muertos ofrendas (offerings) from the Past, Present and Future by Master Altarista, Ofelia Esparza (past), San Diego-based artist Gerardo Acamonchi Yepiz (present) and Marcus Kuiland-Nazario (future); as well as a select number of Día de los Muertos prints, photographs and ephemera from across the four-decade history of SHG’s Día de los Muertos celebrations.
