Serigraph, ed. of 74
30 x 22 in.
My intention in making the design for this serigraph is to honor Self-Help Graphics & Art’s 50th anniversary and its protean and enduring labor promoting Chicanx/Latinx culture. In my print, a couple of heads, one female, one male, bearing DOD painted faces, “dream” together of a flowering nopal with 50 blooms. My work utilizes figurative symbolism and oneiric imagery in order to create poetic, expressive works. I was inspired by the Aztec poet, Tochihuitzin Coyolchiuhqui. Below is an excerpt from one of his poems where ghe states what our mission
on Earth is.
“Como yerba en primavera
es nuestro ser.
Nuestro corazón hace nacer,
germinan flores de nuestra carne.
Algunas abren sus corolas,
luego se secan.”
“We are like spring grass.
Our heart gives birth,
flowers germinate from our flesh.
Some open their corollas,
and then wilt.”
