Sandra Low’s Follow the Lady was created in part of the “Utopia/Dystopia” portfolio, curated by artist Miyo Stevens-Gandara. Miyo invited 26 artists to each pick two cards from a full deck, incorporating a diverse range of interpretations and ideas into a single, unified collection. In Low’s version of Dystopia, the card calls to an unseen player who has lost a game of three-card monte. Because the stakes are high, it ultimately brings about the Apocalypse. Additionally, the number four is unlucky in Chinese culture because it sounds like the word “death.”
In her Utopian print, Low warns to “be careful what you wish for.” The card calls to an unseen player who has won paradise, but must confront the consequences of playing stip poker with God. With naturalistic iconography, both eye-catching and hidden text, and invocations of chance and time, Low presents the world as a roll of die.
Growing up under the strong influence of the television screen, Low is extremely fascinated by the way in which pop-culture has altered the emergence of certain behaviors within the American context. Using surrealism and social commentary, she incorporates humor and parody to explore the power of consumerism and stereotypization. She believes that in portraying the absurdities of human life, people can identify the truths underlying the madness.
Low received Bachelor degrees in Art and Sociology at UC Berkeley, followed by her M.F.A. at the University of Southern California. Working from Los Angeles, her influence reaches widely across Southern California, including exhibitions at Walter Maciel Gallery, the Chinese American Museum, and Los Angeles International Airport, as well as an extensive list of public projects and additional shows. She currently teaches art at Long Beach City College.
