Rogelio Gutierrez’s Untitled silkscreen prints were created in part of the “Utopia/Dystopia” portfolio, curated by artist Miyo Stevens-Gandara. Miyo invited 26 artists to each pick two cards from a full deck, incorporating a diverse range of interpretations and ideas into a single, unified collection. Here, Gutierrez portrays the Huarache, a type of Mexican sandal, that exists as a material symbol of identity and culture across generations and spaces. Black diagonal stripes represent spatial separation in his dystopian print, but the repeated flower patterned imagery represent a sense of shared identity across these gaps.

Raised in California as a first generation Mexican-American, Gutierrez’s work revolves around his own life experiences. Incorporating a range of mediums and presentations, he investigates the ways in which material culture is used to tie communities  together, transcending spatial and geographical distances and disparities. Furthermore, his artwork, especially through the use of non-traditional materials, explores how designs, spaces, and objects can define one’s understanding of identity.

Rogelio Gutierrez is an artist and educator that incorporates a range of art forms. Gutierrez received his B.F.A. in Printmaking from California State University-Long Beach, followed by his M.F.A. in Visual Art and Public Life with an emphasis in Printmaking from Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University. He now is an Associate Professor in the School of Art at Arizona State University. His work has taken him across the United States and Mexico, such as his outdoor projects in Indianapolis, Indiana and Mexico City, D.F.
