Alex Fridwich-Ward’s Bolsa Chica Afternoon and Bolsa Chica Evening were created in part of the “Utopia/Dystopia” portfolio, curated by artist Miyo Stevens-Gandara. Miyo invited 26 artists to each pick two cards from a full deck, incorporating a diverse range of interpretations and ideas into a single, unified collection. Here, Alex juxtaposes two perspectives of the same landscape, the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. These two prints juxtapose one another in their strong, shifting color palettes and naturalistic vs. man-made representations, referencing the rapidly changing visuality of the landscape. The cog stones in the Utopian print reference ancient California pasts while the artillery mount in the Dystopian print foregrounds a sense of loss, due to the environmental destruction of and human encroachment on these lands.

Alex received her B.F.A in Printmaking from California State University Long Beach and now works as a printmaker and bookbinder in Long Beach. She co-founded the Collective Print Studio at the Long Beach Art Exchange, along with her husband in order to offer a space for artists to work and develop their voices. As a printmaker and book binder, she currently she participates at LBPC as a studio artist, as well participating in exhibits and teaching printmaking classes in the Los Angeles area. She is involved at Self Help Graphics as a workshop leader and panelist.
