Montebello G.K.K. is part of Homombre, a collection of silkscreen prints by ten artists that explore the diverse realities, cultures, and struggles of gay Latino men. Car clubs, a historically unique part of Chicano culture, are political and social enclaves centered around cultural collectiveness and visibility. Even though the car culture has changed over the years, “aspiring to a bomb ride” has stayed the same, says Perez. Montobello Gay Kar Klub demonstrates how gayness has migrated from the once secretive gay clubs and bars to the public world of hyper-masculinity and Chicano cultural and political expression, showing the intersectional crossroads between queer and Chicano group identity.
