In Her Truth: A Portrait of Lysa Flores was inspired by the conversations musician Lysa Flores, and I had about our lives as Chicanas who have traveled the world representing our lived truths in the Chicano Movement and how Self Help Graphics remains a catalyst in our creative endeavors after several decades of our participation.
I was introduced to Sr. Karen and Self Help Graphics and Art in 1984. Sr. Karen later invited me to lecture in Madrid, Barcelona, Spain, and Glasgow, Scotland. Upon my return, I was introduced to the music scene and Lysa. It was exciting to meet her as I also played guitar in an all-girl band called Ask Any Girl in the early 1980s.
Our travels and the people/artists we have met influence and touch our art and souls. This image speaks to how we created a safe place in our creativity and how the guitar or paintbrush is a catalyst for self-expression, healing, and growth. By expressing our truth, we have broken some systematic and ancestral cycles.
This print is part of the Re-Membering Generation: 1990's LA Chicana/o/x Music Atelier, a multidisciplinary exploration that documents SHG's vibrant music scene and history in the 1990s.The exhibition pairs eight duets (a visual artist with a musician) to produce original songs and serigraph prints inspired by their conversations, reflections, and memories of the LA music scene of the late 90s.
