This print depicts an image of the 6th St bridge and LA cityscape, with angels in the sky above. A few lines from my song “Cosas Cambiará” (Things Will Change) are printed on the street and walkway of the bridge.
For me, the imagery symbolizes monumental change happening amidst the familiar. It represents connections and intentional journeys from one place to another. The angels drawn in the likeness of my son and nephew symbolize the guardians of life/death and rebirth. They represent my solidarity with all the parents who have lost their children due to the genocide taking place in Gaza.
Growing up in the LA music scene of the late 90s always inspired me to challenge social injustice and embrace freedom of expression through art and music. That era continues to inspire a sense of responsibility to reflect on the world around me through my art.
This print is part of the Re-Membering Generation: 1990's LA Chicana/o/x Music Atelier, a multidisciplinary exploration that documents SHG's vibrant music scene and history in the 1990s.The exhibition pairs eight duets (a visual artist with a musician) to produce original songs and serigraph prints inspired by their conversations, reflections, and memories of the LA music scene of the late 90s.
