Cruzin in the Calle ... Heading to the Volo is an allegory of the artist's work, history with LA's cultural spaces, relationship with Chicana/o art movements, and neighborhood, which spans 40 years.
The serigraph references the work by artist Gilbert "Magu" Luján, the music band Aztlán Underground, the tlacuilo stylization of the Codex Boturini, muralist Eduardo Oropeza's large mosaic Virgen de Guadalupe sculpture, and rapper and songwriter Kid Frost's Eastside Stories LP.
The print consists of various elements: four body pyramids, three circular images, graphic & gradation patterns, and Aztlán as language & concept. Ten screen separations were used, including a transparent amber patina unifying the images, symbolizing the lens through which Chicana/o art tethers content and context in their work. The different elements' use of language and choice of hues interweave Chicana/o art movements, artists, culture, and the social issues shaping the work.
This print is part of the Re-Membering Generation: 1990's LA Chicana/o/x Music Atelier, a multidisciplinary exploration that documents SHG's vibrant music scene and history in the 1990s.The exhibition pairs eight duets (a visual artist with a musician) to produce original songs and serigraph prints inspired by their conversations, reflections, and memories of the LA music scene of the late 90s.
