Self Help Graphics & Art is pulling out its presses to the parking lot for the first time since it’s been closed due to the pandemic. Artists Dewey Tafoya and the Ni Santas crew will create posters in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, that the public can pick up on foot, or in their car this Saturday, June 6 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 7 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., while supplies last. Additional dates include Wednesday, June 10, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. with Dewey and Thursday, June 11, from 11:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. with Ni Santas.

SHG urges all who come by on foot to practice physical distancing (keeping 6 feet apart) and wear masks. The pick-up location for drivers will be eastbound on 1st Street at the parking lot entrance. SHG asks that drivers open their car window for a member of the team to hand them a poster.

In 1968, when Chicano students walked out of their high schools to protest poor conditions, curriculum that did not address their needs, and abuses of power, the police responded with tear gas and brutality. Self Help Graphics & Art emerged from the riot fomented by the police during a peaceful protest against the Vietnam War and the disproportionate number of African American and Mexican American men dying on the front lines. Decades later, violence still perpetuates in communities of color and right now, SHG believes we must speak truth to power about state sanctioned violence against Black lives. So step up, speak out and keep the needle moving for change!
