ALICE BAG
ALICE BAG is a legendary punk rock singer, musician, author, educator, feminist archivist and a self-proclaimed troublemaker. Alice was lead singer and co-founder of The Bags, one of the first wave of punk bands to form in the mid-1970’s in Los Angeles, CA. Check out this feature on Alice and pick up her Debut CD here.

LYSA FLORES
Multitalented musician and actress Lysa Flores emerged out of Los Angeles, California’s Eastside scene as a teenager in the early ‘90s and is an important leader for female Mexican-American artists. Lysa as an activist has always been at the forefront of her body of work since the beginning of her career. Actively participating with local women’s shelters, championing women’s and minorities rights and more recently raising her daughter as a single mom.

Parking for Grand Park is available in Lot 10 on N Broadway between First Street and Temple Street. Parking lot address is 145 N. Broadway, Los Angeles with entrances on Broadway and on Hill St. The Lot 10 parking rate is $3.50 per 15 minutes, or $20.00 maximum per day, and $10.00 per day for weekends, evenings and special events.
A month of art workshops concludes with the construction of a large community altar at Self Help Graphics & Art’s Noche de Ofrenda at Grand Park. Over the past three years, SHG has partnered with Grand Park to expand the reach of this beautiful community altar night with over 30 plus organizations, partners, and artists installing altars of all kinds. Led by premier altar-maker and community resident, Ofelia Esparza, participants are invited to place their newly created offerings or those brought from home together in creating a community altar for display throughout our Dia de los Muertos festivities. This inspirational and important art of traditional altar making serves as a way for the community to contribute their memories with special tokens of remembrance. Featuring special performances as part of this special evening.

Shizu Saldamando depicts how American social spaces are the laboratories for new ways of being. Her portraits playfully suggest that race, gender, and ethnicity act as white noise to the scene at hand; audible, yet not identifiable. Saldamando’s visual biographies, which use friends as her subjects, capture the energy of youthful experimentation and the freedom of malleable categories for identity.
Born to parents of Japanese and Mexican descent, Saldamando resides in Los Angeles but grew up in San Francisco. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles, for her undergraduate work and received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.
About arriving in Los Angeles, she says: “Growing up in the Mission district in San Francisco, it was predominately a hip-hop culture. Here in Los Angeles, I’d go to shows or house parties, and it would be all Latino kids listening to the Cure and the Smiths. In L.A., I felt normal for the first time.” Saldamando’s meticulous collaged paintings offer the viewer a subtlety of influences to ponder.

RECUERDOS
Día de los Muertos is a time when our community shares personal stories. Los Angeles has a unique history of building, deconstructing and reassembling its cultural past. Growing up surrounded by these transitions, the importance of expressing and honoring our cultural identities grew. For 43 years, Self Help Graphics & Art has been a public place for the neighborhood to commemorate and experiment with these rooted cultural practices. The inspiration for this exhibit came from a personal focus on using various forms of altars and ofrendas as a means of engaging and encouraging dialogue with the community. This years theme came from an interest in storytelling, archiving neighborhood histories, and creating environments where people can remember and share the wisdom left by those who have passed on into the afterlife, Mitlán.
Rosalie M. López is a conceptual artist whose artwork involves reforming cultural iconography, often referencing the idealized perfect with more true-to-life icons, in order to highlight and recognize the strength, power, and influence of our communities, while also speaking about cultural and social expressions. She primarily uses printmaking, papel picado, installation, and the altar/offering to relay experiences of survival, loss, and hope.
