ImMigration Exhibition Asks Artists to Respond to Themes of Migration

By Jennifer Cuevas

Curated by Mary Sherwood Brock in collaboration with the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, ImMigration is a collaborative project that asks artists to respond to the complicated and layered themes of migration as part of unique visual exploration. The exhibition is on view at Self Help Graphics & Art from Saturday, January 11 - Saturday, February 22, 2020.

A culmination of 15” right-angle triangular prints, the new iteration of ImMigration includes prints that interpret the theme of water in the form of delicate 3D boats strewn across a floating ocean made of paper, demonstrating barriers created by bodies of water and island identity.

To commemorate the exhibition, Artists Pavel Acevedo, Marianne Sadowski, and Phumelele Tshabalala will participate in a panel discussion at SHG on Saturday, February 1 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Following a walk-through, the artists will discuss the collaborative effort, varying degrees of symbolism and their viewpoints on migration itself.

The exhibition has evolved since its inception at Union Gallery, University of North Texas, as part of the Annual Southern Graphics Council International Conference. It was also previously on view at SCgallery at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy.

ImMigration is a free exhibition on view from January 11, 2020 - February 22, 2020 at Self Help Graphics & Art. SHG is located at 1300 E. 1st. St. LA, CA. 90065. The SHG Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m, Mondays by appointment and weekends during public programming.
