The Region-Wide Collaboration Opening in 2024 Will Explore Intersections of Art and Science
Los Angeles, Calif. (January 27, 2021) – Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) has received a grant to prepare for the next edition of the region-wide arts initiative Pacific Standard Time (PST), scheduled to open in 2024. Funding will support SHG’s PST exhibition, Sinks: Places We call Home. The organization is one of 45 cultural, educational, and scientific institutions throughout Southern California to receive support from the Getty Foundation for their projects, all of which will explore the intersection of art and science. Sinks: Places We Call Home will highlight the environmental disparities created by the manufacturing sites in two communities located near Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG): Exide Battery plant in Vernon and the former Athens Tank Farm (Exxon/Mobil Oil Corporation) site in Willowbrook. Los Angeles-based artists Beatriz Jaramillo and Maru Garcia will partner with SHG and scientists from the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) to conduct data-driven research that reveals harmful practices from the past and the present and their devastating ramifications on people and the environment. Both artists will produce new work for the exhibition; Garcia will pursue soil sampling and remediation studies in the areas surrounding Vernon, while Beatriz will invite voices from the Willowbrook communities into the exhibition through a collaborative installation. An interactive component will use virtual reality to demonstrate land remediation processes.

The funding to support Sinks: Places We Call Home will elevate the voices and stories of the people who form these neighborhoods, and will inform audiences about land contamination and its remedies,” said Marvella Muro, Exhibition Curator and SHG Director of Artistic Programs and Education.
Pacific Standard Time will include dozens of simultaneous exhibitions and programs focused on the intertwined histories of art and science, past and present, that together address some of the most complex challenges of the 21st century—from climate change and environmental racism to the current pandemic and artificial intelligence—and the creative solutions these problems demand.
Self Help Graphics & Art joins a diverse community of Southern California institutions that will present exhibitions, publications, performances, and public conversations and programs in 2024 as part of Pacific Standard Time.
