Dear Community,

Los Angeles and the country have borne witness to the injustices experienced by the Black community, in particular in the wake of the latest killing of George Floyd, by an officer of the law. We mourn the lives of the deceased, including Ahmaud Arbery,  Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade, and share in grief for our Black brothers and sisters. As a Latinx organization rooted in social justice for 47 years, Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and Black relatives everywhere; and supports the need to take our voices to the streets in protest in defense of Black lives. The work to address the systemic racism and inequities that perpetuate the killing of Black citizens is urgent and we are committed to doing our part as an arts organization, as individuals and as a partner, including participation in the Healthy LA coalition. This coalition is working to address the City of Los Angeles’ budget and its disproportionate allocation to police. 

Now is the moment to step up, hold space and shine a light on the Black community and the struggle for justice. We urge you to get informed, sign petitions, donate to critical funds, write to your elected officials and demand transparency and justice for Black people.  We also encourage you to get involved in local organizations that are leading the movement to seek justice for Black lives and the incarcerated, such as Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, Dignity and Power NOW, Reform L.A. Jail, and Justice LA Now, because #BlackLivesMatter every day. #DefendBlackLife

Los Ángeles y el país han sido testigos de las injusticias experimentadas por la comunidad negra, en particular a raíz del último asesinato de George Floyd, por un oficial de la ley. Lloramos la vida de los fallecidos, incluidos Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor y Tony McDade, y compartimos el dolor por nuestros hermanos y hermanas negros. Como organización Latinx arraigada en la justicia social durante 47 años, Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) se solidariza con Black Lives Matter y sus parientes negros en todas partes; y apoya la necesidad de llevar nuestras voces a las calles en protesta en defensa de las vidas negras. El trabajo para abordar el racismo y las desigualdades sistémicas que perpetúan el asesinato de ciudadanos negros es urgente y estamos comprometidos a hacer nuestra parte como organización artística, como individuos y como socios, incluida la participación en la coalición Healthy LA. Esta coalición está trabajando para abordar el presupuesto de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles y su asignación desproporcionada a la policía.

Ahora es el momento de intensificar, mantener el espacio y arrojar luz sobre la comunidad negra y la lucha por la justicia. Le instamos a informarse, firmar peticiones, donar a fondos críticos, escribir a sus funcionarios electos y exigir transparencia y justicia para los negros. También lo alentamos a que se involucre en organizaciones locales que lideran el movimiento para buscar justicia para las vidas de los negros y los encarcelados, como Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, Dignity and Power NOW, Reform L.A.
