Big Citizen Hub Hosts Participatory Budgeting Workshop for Youth at SHG
By Miranda Ynez
Self Help Graphics & Art opened it’s space to Big Citizen Hub on January 21, 2019, an organization whose vision is to mobilize young people for social change. They hosted a “Participatory Budgeting Workshop” that served over 150 youth in attendance. This workshop highlighted the Invest in Youth Campaign which advocates for a Youth Development Department in Los Angeles through Legacy LA and the Boyle Heights Building Healthy Communities (BH BHC) coalition. In addition, the budgetary workshop addressed pertinent issues young people in Los Angeles are facing, in hopes to empower youth to propose youth programming that they would like to see implemented in their neighborhoods.
SHG’s very own Barrio Mobile Art Studio (BMAS) teaching artists facilitated an arts based activity that involved stencil making and mono silk screen printing. The youth created a design on a postcard, inspired by the BMAS workshop that each youth participant would be sending out to their local elected officials. Read more about Big Citizen Hub here.
