Art Para Hoy! Youth & Community Art Programs

Youth Arts Program

As a part of its mission to nurture emerging Latino artists, Self Help Graphics is dedicated to its Art Para Hoy! (Youth & Community Art Programs) by providing over 8,000 local families and children with quality art programming and instruction every year. The goals of Art Para Hoy! are to fortify and expand the use of and access to art for youth 12-18 through SHG's facilities and resources. We serve youth and families with this critical need for programming while providing positive and alternative models for creativity in an environment that is nurturing and reflective of our community.

Self Help Graphics & Art's Youth and Community Programs are sponsored in part by Bank of America, Cal Arts Partnership, California Community Foundation, Rose Hills Foundation, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and the Walt Disney Company.

PROGRAMS INCLUDE:

Cal Arts Partnership (CAP) Digital Media Project

This is a 30-week, free-of-charge program for teenagers (ages 15 to 18), which takes place once-a-week at Self-Help Graphics & Art. Students learn computer design applications, printmaking, T-Shirt design, screenprinting and digital video production. The program culminates with an exhibition of the work at Self-Help Graphics & Art, at the California Institute of the Arts, as well as with a screening at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex in downtown Los Angeles. These workshops are part of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership Program (CAP).

Community Art Workshops

CAW is a series of workshops, which occur every Saturday between October and December of each year, and are led by professional artists/teachers as well as community members (considered masters in a particular craft). This program serves participants of all ages, but particularly underserved youth, providing them with the opportunity to create culturally inspired art objects. Workshops include papel picado, luminarias, paper mache, mask making, sugar skull decorating and ower making, face and body painting, food, crafts, and murals. This program is unique from others in that the work is directly created in relation to popular community celebrations such as Dia de los Muertos and Dia de la Virgin de Guadalupe--all of which are Latino community revered holidays. Because these celebrations are culturally signicant for East Los Angeles’ Latino community in that they foster identity, culture, pride, civic participation and community health, the workshops function within a framework that welcomes all participaats from dierent backgrounds by bringing unique cultural events together with artists and art. Community Art Workshops serve approximately 400 people per year. These workshops have also proven to provide families with healthy and positive experiences that honor Latino cultural traditions and encourage wider participation in the arts.

S.O.Y. Artista Program (Summer of Youth Artist Program)

S.O.Y. Artista is an eight-week summer art-training workshop for local youths (12-18 years old) who are recruited from local youth groups, schools, and other community centers in East LA. This youth project’s goal is to fortify and expand the use and access to art through Self-Help’s facilities and resources. The seven-week course is taught by local, professional artists and consists of various workshops including two-week tracks in woodblock printing, etching, and silk-screen mono printing. S.O.Y. Artista is a summer program that serves local youth during a time when youth programming is scarce. We serve youth with this critical need for programming while providing positive and alternative models for creativity in an environment that is nurturing and reective of this particular group of youth. In some cases, students use the work created in the program for admission portfolios to LA County High School of the Arts or for admission/scholarship consideration for college art programs. Our goal is to serve 60-80 local students through the summer. Classes are meant to inspire one on one instruction and provide in-depth art experiences that culturally connect youth to their community, and create stronger coalitions between community organizations, students and higher learning.

S.O.Y. Artista (Summer of Youth Artist Program) is a seven-week summer art-training workshop for local youths ages 14 to 18 that is provided free of charge. S.O.Y. Artista serves high school students with a critical need for summer programming while providing positive and alternative models for creativity in an environment that is nurturing and reflective of their lives and culture.
